The cauliflower contains a number of nutrients like antioxidants, which impart it with many health benefits.

The word cauliflower literally means “cabbage flower”, for it is a member of the cabbage family. The species also includes broccoli, kale, collard greens and Brussels sprouts. It is also part of the “white” group of vegetables, like mushrooms and onions. The cauliflower originated in the north-east Mediterranean, but is now grown all over the world. Like other cruciferous vegetables, it has a number of health benefits.

Composition of the Cauliflower

The cauliflower contains a number of nutrients. It is rich in antioxidants vitamin C and other phytonutrients called glucosinolates. Calcium is present in the greens around the head. It has a high phosphorus and manganese content and vitamins, specially vitamin K, folate and B6. It has some amount of carbohydrates, protein and fats and a considerable amount of fiber. Moreover, it has omega 3 fatty acids (as alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA), allicin, selenium and sulforaphane. However, it is low in calories.

Health Benefits of the Cauliflower

Studies have shown that cruciferous vegetables like the cauliflower have preventive properties against some types of cancer, like breast cancer, prostrate cancer, ovarian cancer and bladder cancer. Indole-3-carbinol in cauliflower prevents some female cancers. Antioxidants neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals, so cauliflower guards against degenerative diseases. The fiber content too prevents cancers and protects the colon. Finally, the sulforaphane removes cancer causing chemicals and thus arrests the spread of cancer cells.

The allicin in cauliflower reduces the risk of strokes and improves the health of the heart. Selenium and vitamin C work together to boost the immune system. Folate in cauliflower is required for cell growth and is beneficial during pregnancy.

The presence of ALA and vitamin K impart anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, the cauliflower is beneficial for cardiac health and maintains a healthy level of cholesterol. It also alleviates conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The glucosinolates in cauliflower boost liver function and the elimination of toxins, thus purifying the blood.

The cauliflower has a number of health benefits due to its contents. The antioxidants and fiber guard against cancer. It also boosts cardiac health and immunity and alleviates painful conditions.
